Snow in September??!!

On Sunday, September 7th, we enjoyed an afternoon bike ride in the park and ice cream afterwards.  The temperature was 82 degrees.  The very next day, I was sending the kids to school in snow boots and winter coats, as the high temp was 30 degrees and we were expecting snow!  And boy, did we get snow!!  About 3 inches fell on Monday, and Ben was thrilled!  I, on the other hand, wasn't sure whether I should laugh or cry...

But wait, it didn't stop with only 3 inches.  Over the next few days, there was a steady stream of snow that covered the city.  In total, I think we got almost a foot of snow - in September!!  Apparently, we were skipping right from the lawn mower to the snow shovels.  What happened to raking autumn leaves??

As of Wednesday morning, the snow was still falling.  It was really wet and heavy and causing lots of damage to trees all over the city.  Apparently, it was causing damage to power lines as well because we lost power early that morning.  As we were trying to get ready for our day (in the dark), I got a call from Nathalie's preschool teacher that class was cancelled.  The building had lost power, and the parking lot was covered in huge fallen branches.  A snow day in September?  Now we have reached total insanity.  :)  We did get Ben off to school, and then Nathalie and I spent the morning cuddling on the couch, reading stories, and playing dollhouse.  Poor thing wasn't really understanding why we couldn't watch a movie, and I was also a bit disappointed that I couldn't make a cup of coffee or even a pot of tea (electric stove).  Ugh!  I did catch Nathalie doing a little cleaning...maybe this "no electricity" is a good thing?  :)  Power was restored around 1 p.m., and the snow finally did come to an end later that evening.  What an unexpected week it's been!  It's not really the snow that I was mad at, it was the idea of skipping right past my favorite season.  I'm not ready for snowflakes and hot chocolate just yet...first I need some falling leaves and apple cider!  Happy Fall!!

First Day of School 2014

Tuesday, September 2, 2014 - first day of grade 2 for Benjamin at Sunalta School!  Ben was a little nervous about starting at a new school, but had a great first day!  We can't believe our first baby is old enough to be in grade 2.  Didn't we just bring him home from the hospital?  :)  Praying for an amazing year for you Ben - one of challenge and joy and growth and laughter and learning and friends.  You are an outstanding kiddo and you make us very proud!

Wednesday, September 3, 2014 - first day of 4 year old preschool for Nathalie at Glendale Community Preschool!  It was a really smooth transition for her, as she is at the same school with the same teacher.  She will attend 3 days a week now instead of 2, and she was so excited to see all her friends again.  That afternoon, we were reading stories on the couch, and she went upstairs to get a different book.  I thought she got preoccupied with looking at books by herself.  After 10 minutes, I walk upstairs to check on her and find her asleep in her bed.  :)  Sweet girl...we pray for new experiences and learning and fun and giggles.  You are a darling daughter and fill our hearts with joy!

So Long, Summer!

Hard to believe that summer is coming to an end!  Ben decided to lose that other top tooth in the  middle of the night on August 23rd, just in time for family pictures the next morning.  Ha!  Actually, I was so relieved that it came out...it was barely hanging on and did not look pretty as it stuck out in all directions.  The "jack-o-lantern" effect was much better, in my opinion.

The final week of August was PedalHeads bike camp.  We wanted Nathalie to feel a bit more comfortable on her bigger bike, and she did.  We were hoping Ben would find the confidence to kiss those training wheels goodbye, and he did!!  So proud of our bikers!

We did not wrap up summer with a ski trip, although Greg can dream, but it was time for little Miss to get her own set of skis.  As soon as the sales associate brought out pink skis with flowers, she was SOLD!  Now we just have to be patient for a few months before she can try them out...

Last night of summer...hot dogs, s'mores, and enjoying a beautiful summer evening.  It's been a great summer full of new experiences and wonderful memories.  Can't wait to see what the school year brings!
